Lyndonville, VT - Reilly Velez, a forward from Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, NH, has deposited and committed to the Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's basketball program for the Fall 2019 semester. Velez will study Electronic Journalism Arts at Lyndon.
Velez is a two-year varisty performer at Portsmouth. As a senior starter she helped lead the Clippers to the New Hampshire Division I state championship game. She shot 40% from behind the arc this season. At the end of her senior season, Velez was recognized with her team's Coaches Award.
Hornet head coach Sean Lynch is excited that Velez will become a Hornet. "As a starter for a very good Portsmouth team, Reilly shined as a steady contributor. She is tough, unselfish and talented. Her ability to guard multiple positions and to shoot the three consistenly will help our team on both ends of the court. Most importantly, Reilly is a high character individual who will have a positive impact on our team, school and community. We are thrilled that Reilly has chosen to continue her athletic career at NVU-Lyndon."
Portsmouth coach Tim Hopley added "Reilly is a unique blend of strength and skill. Her ability to play with her back to the basket or face up on the perimeter makes her a tough guard for opposing defenses, while her size and physicality allow her to be able to defend both the paint and the perimeter at the other end. Beyond that, she is a team-first player who is willing to do the little things that help teams win. Hornet fans will love her!"
Velez joins Hannah Buffum of Chester, VT in the Hornets' 2019 recruiting class. The Hornets expect to announce additional commitments in the near future.
