Hornet women come back from early deficit to down Newbury in season opener

Watertown, MA - After spotting host Newbury College an early three-goal lead the Lyndon State College women's lacrosse team ran off ten unanswered goals and cruised to a 17-7 victory on Thursday afternoon.  The game was the season opener for both teams, as well as the debut for Hornet head coach Emily Stearns.

Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, VT) and Taylor Cavaliero (Somers, NY) led the Hornets with five goals each.  Hodge added two assists and eight draw controls.  Elizabeth Start (Randolph, VT) recorded four ground balls, six draw controls, and two caused turnovers.  Lyndon goalie Paige Daley (Pleasant Valley, NY) stopped six of the 13 shots that she faced.

Venezia Delgadillo (Sharon, MA) led the Nighthawks with four goals and three ground balls.  Newbury goalie Kelly Molloy (Staten Island, NY) stopped ten of 27 shots.

Lyndon outshot Newbury 29-13 and held a 15-11 advantage in draw controls.  The Nighthawks turned the ball over 24 times, compared to 19 for the Hornets.  Lyndon held a slim 17-16 advantage in ground balls.

The Hornets return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Dean College for a 2:00 pm start.  Newbury will host Curry College next Tuesday.
