Buzzrds Bay, MA - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's lacrosse team opened their 2019 season on Sunday afternoon, falling to Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 20-1. The host Buccaneers improve to 2-3 on the season.
Mass Maritime dominated play from the onset, scoring 13 goals in the first nine minutes on the way to building a 16-1 halftime advantage. The Buccaneers' Alyssa Blumenthal scored all three of her goals during the opening barrage, whiel Amanda Gould, Cammi Balentine, Heather Seggelin, and Casey Sullivan each scored twice in the first half. Bayla Stewart (Newport, VT) got the Hornets on the board when she converted a free position shot with 7:23 to go in the opening half.
Mass Maritime tacked on four second half goals to account for the final margin. For the game, Mass Maritime outshot Lyndon 32-1 and held a 40-10 advantage in ground balls. Hornet goalie Zoe Pierce-Olhson (Gales Ferry, CT) made four saves on the afternoon.
The Hornets will return to action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Thomas College for a non-conference matchup. The opening draw is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
