LYNDON CENTER, Vt. — Michaela Horne scored three goals and Olivia Biron added two to lead St. Michael's to a 7-0 victory over Lyndon in a non-conference women's soccer matchup at the Lyndon Athletics Field.
"We played an upper division team and we had a handful of injuries, but we played well at times," said Hornet Head Coach Sean Bliss. "We didn't give up or back down. Shelby Sheridan (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) and Lindi Libera (Burke, Vt.) worked very hard and were a spark for the team. They helped keep our level of intensity up for 90 minutes."
Horne scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 15:09 mark of the first half off a pass from teammate Cassie Chernicki who pushed the ball down the left side of the field before sending a pass across the Hornet goal mouth. Less than seven minutes later Biron made it 2-0 punching home a pass off the foot of Horne.
Megan Pfeffer got into the scoring act for the Purple Knight late in the opening half when she headed home a ball on a perfect cross from Allegra DiCesare.
Horne struck again six minutes into the second half off an assist from Biron and completed her hat trick at 69:22 with an unassisted tally from 18 meters out. Biron second goal at 78:53 and Abby Pelon's marker at 81:44 closed out the scoring in the contest and sent St. Michael's on to its first win of the season.
Aubrey Ouellet and Kaylee Sullivan did not make a save in the game for the Purple Knights while Lyndon goalie Marley Harmon (Buxton, Maine)stopped eight shots in the loss.
"We put this loss behind us and move forward," said Bliss. "Mitchell is a different team than St. Michael's and we'll be a different team on Sunday as well."
St. Michael's (1-2) outshot Lyndon 34-2 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Purple Knights will host American International Saturday at 4 p.m. while the Hornets entertain Mitchell Sunday at 12 p.m.
