CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton opened the North Atlantic Conference season by beating Lyndon 4-0 Saturday to improve to 4-4 overall on the season. Mallory Costello had a hat trick for Castleton, while Kiley Baran notched her first goal of her career.
Less than a minute after that Castleton notched its first goal of the game, giving them a 1-0 lead, Costello stole the ball from a Hornets defender just outside of the box, attacked towards the goal and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
The Spartans doubled their lead in the 11th minute when Costello notched her second goal of the match. Dominique Valancius was flying down the flank for and delivered a cross perfectly in the box. Costello came flying forward and headed the ball into the top corner of the net to give Castleton a 2-0 lead.
In the 20th minute, Julianna Anderson (Manchester, N.H.) made a spectacular save for the Hornets when Valancius sent in another dangerous cross into the box, and Nicole Wershoven volleyed it towards the net, but Lyndon's keeper deflected the ball out of play.
Nine minutes later, Castleton extended its lead to three courtesy of Baran. Costello took a shot that deflected off the far post, and the freshman forward was there to knock it in, giving the Spartans a 3-0 advantage.
After the break, Castleton continued to pressure Lyndon, taking four shots and forcing two saves in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half.
In the 58th minute, Castleton had its first opportunity of the second half. Valancius' cross flew into the box and Jessica Phillips connected with it, one-timing a shot. However, the shot was blocked and Carlson gathered the ball and rocketed a shot that the forced Anderson to make a quality save.
The Spartans best opportunity of the second half came with 20 minutes left to play. Carlson's through ball found a wide open Wershoven in the box, forcing the keeper to come out and try to make a save. Wershoven's was able to beat the keeper, but her shot rolled just inches wide of the post.
Costello finished the scoring when she knocked in her third goal of the game in the 74th minute, marking the fourth time in her career that she has recorded a hat trick. Katie Sanders provided a through ball that Costello collected on the 18-yard line and buried into the bottom left corner of the goal, giving Castleton a 4-0 lead.
Jessica Binkowski earned the shutout victory in net after making two saves for Castleton. Anderson took the loss after allowing three goals and stopping eight shots in 73:34. Marley Harmon (Buxton, Maine) made one save and allowed a goal in 16:26 minutes of relief.
The Hornets (4-4) return to action Saturday when they host Husson University in another NAC match beginning at noon.
