LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's soccer squad continued non-conference action Saturday afternoon against Mitchell College with a 1-0 victory on a goal from Larissa Gemberling (Mechanicsburg, Penn.) late in the second half. The win ties them with last year's win total of two.
The Hornets controlled the first half, keeping the ball in the Mariners turf the majority of the 45 minutes.
The Hornets had an opportunity to score with a penalty shot at the 57th minute, but the shot went wide left. With less than fifteen minutes left in the second half, the Hornets' Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, N.H.) sent a cross from the right side connecting with Larissa Gemberling who was crashing in front of the net. Gemberling one-touched it past the keeper into the net. The Hornets had a few scares as the Mariners got two shots off that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced straight down. The second time it occurred, the Mariners' Tiana Edwards placed the rebound in the net but the linesman had his flag up signaling offside, nullifying the goal.
The Hornets sent the visitors sailing with the 1-0 decision.
Johanna Sargent (West Brookfield, Vt.) recorded her second win of the season with four saves.
DeWitt hit three of her four shots on goal adding the lone assist for the game. Gemberling collected her second goal of the season.
Lyndon (2-1-0, 0-0 NAC) travels to Plattsburgh State tomorrow, Sunday, September 11th with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
