Lyndonville, VT - The shorthanded Lyndon State College women's soccer team was never able to get anything going on Saturday afternoon and was defeated, 9-0, by Castleton University. Eight different Spartans scored as Castleton won for the fourth time in its last five games and raised its overall record to 4-3-1 and its North Atlantic Conference mark to 3-0. The Hornets remain winless on the year, dropping to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in NAC play.
Bronwen Hopwood (Hinesburg, VT) got Castleton on the board in the 5th minute, scoring off of an assist from Makenzi Bellando (Carver, MA). The Spartans tallied three more times in the opening half, as Kate Steller (Merrimack, NH), Aubra Linn (Hampden, ME), and Madison Aponte (Palmer, MA) all found the back of the net to send Castleton into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
Things didn't get any better for the Hornets in the second half, as Bellando scored twice in the first three minutes of the half to make it 6-0 Castleton. Kinnan Latremore (Chazy, NY), Julia Carone (Bomoseen, VT), and Mikayla Sullivan (Fairfield, VT) each tallied single goals to account for the final margin.
Lyndon was without several players due to injury and only dressed 11 for the contest. The Spartans got off 28 shots, while the Hornets did not record a shot. Lyndon senior goalkeeper Johanna Sargent (Randolph, VT) made five saves, while Castleton goalkeepers Kiley Baran (Granby, MA) and Rachel Shambo (Lake George, NY) combined for the clean sheet for Castleton.
Lyndon returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Green Mountain College for a 3:30 pm North Atlantic Conference contest. Castleton plays at Plymouth State University on Wednesday.
