Lyndonville, VT - The Lyndon State College women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday, hosting Johnson State College on Varsity Field. Unfortunately for the home team, Johnson opened up a three goal halftime lead, and cruised to a 6-2 victory. The loss drops Lyndon to 0-12-1 overall and 0-8-1 in North Atlantic Conference play, while Johnson closes their season at 5-10 and 1-8 in the NAC.
Johnson's Kylie Aither (Hyde Park, VT) put the Badgers on the board when she scored on a penalty kick in the 7th minute. The Hornets had a great chance to get the equalizer ten minutes later, but Lyndon's Brooke Breault (Albany, VT) was denied on a defensive save by Shannon Rooney (Waterville, VT). In the 39th minute, Aither fed Kelsey Cauchon (Colchester, VT), to make it 2-0, Johnson. Three and a half minutes later Aither's second goal sent Johnson into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
Breault narrowed the deficit to 3-1 with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute. However, Aither completed her hat trick in the 75th minute, scoring on an assist from Cauchon to once again make it a three-goal game. Lyndon's Kiya DeWitt (Pittsburg, NH) found the net a minute later to make it 4-2, but Johnson tacked on a pair of late goals from Katherine Fish (Lake Elmore, VT) and Andrea Mercer (Naugatuck, CT) to account for the final margin.
Saturday's game marked the final home contest for DeWitt, as well as fellow Lyndon seniors Anna Gear (Fort Myers, FL), Rose Wilson (Marshfield, VT), Heidi Neuhausser (Unity, NH), Sarah Gerry (South Hero, VT), and Johanna Sargent (Randolph, VT). The seniors were recognized and honored in a brief ceremony prior to the contest.
Lyndon closes out its season on Tuesday with a road game at Norwich University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
