Hornet women's soccer celebrates Senior Day with a win over Green Mountain

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Green Mountain College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.  With the win the Hornets improve to 3-7 on the season while the Eagles fall to 3-5.

Green Mountain got on the Varsity Field scoreboard first on Saturday afternoon.  In the 15th minute Hornet goalie Lauren Young (Danville, VT) saved Jessica Bradley's direct kick, but the Eagles' Avery Barber poked the rebound past Young to give the Eagles the lead.

Lyndon answered just over a minute later when Kelsey Jacobs (Braintree, VT) took a pass from Tori Carlson (East Haven, CT) and lofted a shot from just outside the box over Eagle goalie Jessica Casey and into the top of the net.  The rest of the half was fairly evenly contested.  However netither team was able to score again so they entered halftime tied at 1-1.

In the 62nd minute the Hornets' Taylor Hollis (Corinth, VT) found Jacobs, who again was able to float a shot over Casey and into the net, giving Lyndon a 2-1 advantage.  Lyndon added an insurance goal in the 75th minute when Carlson found Jessica Hillman (Gardener, ME) and Hillman's shot beat Casey and found the upper right corner of the net.  Lyndon's defense held strong the rest of the way and the Hornets emerged with the win.

Play was relatively even throughout the match.  Green Mountain outshot Lyndon 16-15, but the Hornets earned three corner kicks to none for the Eagles.  Young stopped eight on nine shots on goal to earn the win for the Hornets, while Casey made five saves in taking the loss.

Lyndon also celebrated Senior Day on Saturday.  Prior to the match Hornet seniors Carlson and Makayla Epps (South Weymouth, MA) were joined on the field by their families and recognized for their contributions to Hornet athletics.  The Hornet women's soccer program also recognized Green Mountain seniors Kali DeMarco, Taylor Merritt, and Naomi Peduzzi.

The Hornets return to action on Monday when they travel to Pine Manor College for a 12:00 noon Columbus Day non-conference matchup.
