JOHNSON, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's tennis team fell 9-0 in a non-conference match at Johnson State College Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson State took all three doubles matches to open the contest. The team of Katerina Van Woerkom and Nicole Monick defeated the top flight doubles pairing of Nichole Jones (Lisbon Falls, Maine) and Carina Alden (Marlborough, Mass.), 8-3. Kali Covell and partner Sam Kershner were able to hold off the team of Alexa Richard (Haverhill, Mass.) and Samantha Fisher (Brattleboro, Vt.) to win second flight doubles 8-6. The Badgers' duo of Ashley Fogg and Mikayla Messier topped Haley Bouley (Holliston, Mass.) and Phoebe Achinda (Hinesburg, Vt.), 8-1.
Johnson once again dominated singles play, winning all six matches. Van Woerkom took #1 singles in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 over Jones. Reigning NAC Rookie of the Week Grace Page also claimed a straight sets victory over Alden in number two singles with two 6-0 set victories. In third flight singles action, Jana Somero earned an 8-3 victory for the Badgers over Richard.
Covell won her #4 singles match via retirement due to injury of Fisher. Monick took fifth flight singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Boule, while Jordan Miller claimed the final singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Achinda to give Johnson the sweep.
The Hornets (0-3, 0-0 NAC) host Castleton Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to begin conference play.
Johnson (3-0, 0-0 NAC) will host Western New England at 1:00 PM on Sunday, September 11.
