JOHNSON, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's volleyball team opened up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a 3-1 win at Johnson State College Tuesday night in Carter Gymnasium.
Strong offense pushed Johnson out to a 15-5 early lead in the opening set before Lyndon answered with six straight points. The teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the set, with Johnson coming out on top 25-18.
In the second set, Lyndon jumped out to a quick 11-5 lead. Johnson closed the gap and the teams remained neck and neck throughout the remainder of the set, until Lyndon pull away with a 25-17 win.
The third set went back and forth for most of the way until Lyndon pulled away for a 25-20 victory.
The Hornets jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the fourth set, but Badgers were able to claw their way back to within 3. However, the Hornets pulled away again to end the final set, 25-16.
Freshman Lauren McDonough (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the Hornets with a double-double of 16 kills and a match-high 13 digs, along with a match-high eight aces. Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) added 10 kills and five digs while Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Mass.) registered seven kills and 11 assists.
Breanna Laughlin paced the Badgers with a match-high 20 kills, seven aces, and seven digs. Kimberly Reville added nine kills, two aces, and seven digs. Laurel Hubbert-Severance led the Johnson offense with 27 assists.
Lyndon (5-3, 1-0 NAC) will travel for a tri-match Saturday against Mass. Maritime and host Becker College
Johnson (1-9, 0-1 NAC) will travel to Longmeadow, Massachusetts for a tri-match on Saturday against Bay Path and Castleton.
