LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's volleyball team hosted Keene State College in non-conference action Tuesday night, with the visitors coming away with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-19, 25-22).
Senior Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) smacked a match-high 11 kills for the Hornets while adding seven digs. Fellow senior Abbie Greene (Exeter, R.I.) added nine kills and a match-high 10 digs while senior Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Mass.) controlled the offense with 25 assists and recorded nine digs.
Kat Carrel (Avon, Mass.) led the Owls with eight kills while Katie Cunningham (Nelsonville, N.Y.) and Jenny Nohara (Honolulu, Hawaii) tallied 11 and nine assists, respectively. Riley Bunker led the defense with nine digs.
The Hornets jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the first set but the Owls responded with five straight points to take back the lead. The score stayed close until the Owls used a six point run to stretch the advantage to 19-12 before coasting to a 25-17 win in the opening set.
Early in the second set, the visitors tallied nine straight points for an 11-3 lead. Keene State continued their solid play as they kept Lyndon at a distance to take set two 25-19.
The Hornets were able to build momentum in the third set with six consecutive points thanks to three kills from Murtagh. The hosts were able to build a 7-3 lead but the Owls battled back to tie the set at 13-13. The teams traded kills before the Owls worked to build a 24-20 lead. Kills from Stahl and Murtagh brought the Hornets to within two at 24-22, but a kill from Katie Dyer finished out the set and the match.
Lyndon (7-8, 1-2 NAC) host a quad-match Saturday, taking on UMaine-Presque Isle and Husson University at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Keene State (14-7, 4-0 LEC) take on UMass.-Boston at home Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
