POULTNEY, Vt. – The Lyndon State College women's volleyball team secured the fourth seed in the North Atlantic Conference tournament after a sweep of Castleton University and Green Mountain College at the Eagle Dome. The Hornets opened up the afternoon with an exciting 3-2 win over Castleton before cruising to a 3-0 win over Green Mountain.
Lyndon vs. Castleton
The Hornets started strong, easily taking the first two sets 25-18 and 25-13 but the Spartans refused to go down without a fight.
Castleton used a late set rally to take a 21-14 lead. Lyndon pushed back and came within one point at 23-22 before two straight points from Castleton completed the set.
The Hornets seemed to be in position to close out the match in the fourth set as they jumped out to an 18-11 lead. The Spartans scored nine straight points to take the lead at 20-18. The Spartans forced the deciding set as they won the fourth set 25-20.
Again the Hornets surged ahead for the early lead at 9-3. However, the Spartans answered to tie it 9-9. After trading points a few times, the teams found themselves knotted at 13-13 but the Hornets prevailed after two straight points.
Lauren McDonough (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the attack with 17 kills and four aces while adding 15 digs. Abbie Greene (Exeter, R.I.) recorded 12 kills and 12 digs while Kelleigh Murtagh (Merrimack, N.H.) notched 11 kills and 11 digs. Gwyneth Stahl (Whitinsville, Vt.) controlled the offense with 36 assists, adding eight aces and 11 digs.
Lyndon vs. Green Mountain
Kelleigh Murtaugh registered 13 kills while hitting .423 from the floor to help lead Lyndon as they coasted to the 3-0 victory over Green Mountain.
In addition to her 13 kills, Murtaugh posted seven digs and a block assist. Abbey Green finished with 11 kills, three service aces and five digs. Gwyneth Stahl led the offense with her 24 assists and also accumulated seven digs and a block assist. Lauren McDonough chipped in 10 digs, while also recording four kills and three service aces.
Green Mountain was led by Taylor Hill who notched seven kills and seven digs. Torie Cowell supplemented the offense with six kills and five digs. Taleana Trammell orchestrated the offense by posting 12 assists while also joining Kionee Brits in tallying two total blocks.
The Hornets upped their overall record to 10-9 while advancing their conference mark to 4-3. Lyndon will host Castleton on Saturday, October 29 for the NAC quarterfinal match at a time to be determined.
