Bennington, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon volleyball team came up short against Southern Vermont College and Norwich University on the first day of play at the 2018 Vermont Volleyball Classic, hosted by Southern Vermont. The Hornets fall to 0-4 on the season, while the matches were the season openers for both the Mountaineers and the Cadets.
Southern Vermont 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-2, 25-8, 25-7)
The host Mountaineers took advantage of 26 Hornet receiving errors in cruising to the win. Meg Maddalena led Southern Vermont with 11 kills, while Dahlia Rafael-Tirado recorded 14 assists. Faith Richard (Acushnet, MA) had nine digs for the Hornets and Alexis Britch (Essex Junction, VT) added six digs.
Norwich 3, NVU-Lyndon 0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-7)
The Hornets again hurt themselves, as they committed 25 receiving errors and 17 attack errors. The Cadets' Michele Zummo paced a varied attack with eight kills, while setter Emily Oliver posted 21 assists. Richard recorded four kills for Lyndon, while Samantha Theriault (West Ossipee, NH) led the team with four digs.
The Hornets will conclude pool play at the VVC on Monday morning when they face Northern Vermont University-Johnson at 10:00 am. The Classic championshiop match will be played at 4:00 pm, immediately following a 2:00 pm consolation match.
