Hornets set to open volleyball campaign at Vermont Classic this weekend

Lyndonville, VT - The Northern Vermont University-Lyndon volleyball team will open the 2019 season at this weekend's Vermont Volleyball Classic, hosted by NVU-Johnson.  The Hornets will be looking to bounce back from a winless 2018 season to become a factor in the North Atlantic Conference.

Volleyball Media Day

On Friday the Hornets will get the tournament started when they face the host Badgers at 1:00 pm.  Friday evening Lyndon faces Castleton University at 7:00 pm.  The Hornets' final pool match will take place Saturday morning at 9:00 am when they square off against Norwich University.  After pool play concludes, the top two finishers will meet for the Classic championship at 3:00 pm.  that match will be preceded by a consolation matchup at 1:00 pm.

Lyndon will be led by sophomore outside hitter Emily Clancy (Durham, CT).  In her freshman season Clancy finished second on the team in kills with 36, first in digs with 91 and first in aces with 32.  The Hornets' only other returnee is junior setter and defensive specialist Vanessa Soares (Naugatuck, CT).

Former NVU-Johnson assistant Dana John takes over the reigns for Lyndon this season.  She is optimistic about the short and long term outlook for the program.  " I am optimistic about what we can accomplish this year.  We have much to do and learn, but I am confident we won't be the same team by the end of the season.  I am expecting a lot from them and there will be a good amount of competition on the floor for positions.  So far I like how the team is shaping up and I'm excited and ready to see what we can do on the court!   Most of our team is brand new this season.  The biggest thing I hope to accomplish this year is inspire a growth mindset, team spirit, and develop each player to their next potential level."

The Hornets have been picked to finish 7th in the NAC 2019 pre-season coaches poll.  Three-time defending NAC champion Maine Maritime Academy was picked to repeat, with SUNY Canton selected as runner-up.  The predicted order of finish is:

  1. Maine Maritime Academy
  2. SUNY Canton
  3. University of Maine at Presque Isle
  4. Northern Vermont University-Johnson
  5. Husson University
  6. SUNY Delhi
  7. Northern Vermont University-Lyndon
